Two Ugandans who were abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) testified before a Senate subcommittee on African affairs. One of them Jacob Acaye, was made famous by the Kony video released by an NGO (non-governmental agency) earlier in 2012.
U.S. Military Forces in Uganda

Defense and State Department officials testified on President Obama's decision to send 100 U.S. military advisers to advise local forces fighting the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and its leader, Joseph Kony, in Uganda, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
Joseph Kony was under indictment by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, including mass rape and the use of child soldiers. A 2010 law authorized U.S. military assistance for multilateral efforts to suppress the group. During the hearing several members criticized the proposed deployment and expressed concerns about the mission parameters.

Book Discussion on [The Teeth May Smile but the Heart Does Not Forget]

Andrew Rice talked about his book [The Teeth May Smile but the Heart Does Not Forget] (Metropolitan Books; May 26, 2009). In his book he investigates the history of Uganda, the legacy of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, and the process of reconciliation, through the story of Duncan Laki, whose father, a local chief, was murdered there in 1972. The trial 30 years later of Idi Amin's second-in-command, Major General Yusuf Gowon, allowed the people of Uganda to confront their past. Mr. Rice read passages of his book and then discussed them with Mr. Palatella. He then responded to questions from members of the audience.
Andrew Rice has covered Africa for [The New York Times Magazine, The New Republic], and [The Economist]. He lived in Uganda from 2002 to 2004. John Palattella, literary editor for [The Nation], has published several of Mr. Rice's pieces.
