Book Discussion on [No They Can't: Why Government Fails - But Individuals Succeed]

John Stossel contends that the government and politicians, regardless of political affiliation, are incapable of addressing the political and social issues facing the United States. The author, host of Fox Business Network's Stossel, argues that Americans need to think as individuals and stop looking to the government for assistance. Mr. Stossel presented his thoughts on a range of subjects, from free trade and health insurance to education. He also responded to questions from members of the audience at the Harvard Club in New York City.

Book Discussion on [Corporate Warriors: Privatized Military Industry]

Mr. Singer discussed his new book, [Corporate Warriors: The Rise of the Privatized Military Industry], published by Cornell University Press. The book explores how private, specialized military firms have changed the ways in which wars are fought. The author asserts that governments are seeking out these corporations because of their cost efficiency, which sometimes comes through excessive cost cutting. Many of these companies employ former military officials as consultants and executives. However, contractors are not bound by military law and can be deployed more flexibly. There are also competing loyalties and priorities. After his presentation, the author answered questions from members of the audience.
