Richard Engel spoke at a Newseum rededication ceremony for its Journalists Memorial. He talked about his abduction and rescue while reporting from Syria in 2012, and why he works as a foreign correspondent. He also addressed the controversy surrounding the Newseum's consideration of including two people who were killed while working at a Hamas' news outlet.
The Journalists Memorial rededication ceremony began in 1996 to honor newspeople who died or were killed in the pursuit of news. The names of 82 journalists who died covering the news in 2012 were be added to the memorial, along with six journalists killed in previous years who were recently brought to the Newseum's attention. The 2012 death toll of 84 was the fourth highest number of journalists killed in a single year.

Q&A with Scott Shane

Scott Shane talked about his [New York Times] Sunday feature story, "From Spy to Source to Convict," an examination of a former CIA officer in prison for leaking information to a reporter. He detailed the charges against former agent John Kiriakou, a 14-year veteran of the agency who gained notoriety by speaking out against water boarding in an ABC News interview with reporter Brian Ross. Mr. Shane outlined his own involvement as one of the reporters with whom Kiriakou spoke. He said the case was one of six prosecutions during the Obama administration for leaking information to the news media, and that previously only three other prosecutions for leaking information to the press had been prosecuted under the Espionage Act of 1917. He suggested that e-mail and other electronic records have contributed to the increase in cases being brought, and that Attorney General Eric Holder had not exercised prosecutorial discretion to stop the cases from proceeding.

Impact of Social Media on Journalism

Bill Grueskin, academic dean of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, talked about the use of social media in reporting. Reporters have gone from virtual anonymity to having thousands of followers, but this branding has risks and rewards for journalists and institutions. There is an economic incentive for news organization to control social media as they lose some of those followers if the journalist changes jobs, but some have been fired for opinions expressed on social media. The need to be provocative to obtain more followers can call the journalist's fairness into question. Topics included the tension between the necessary spontaneity of social media and careful editing.
"Reporting in a Social Media World" was a program held at the Commerce Club by the Atlanta Press Club with the Columbia School of Journalism.
