Open Phones 2

Telephone lines were open for comments on the 2012 presidential campaign.
Adam Smith talked by telephone about the Florida primary, which under current law is set for Jan. 31, 2012. The national Republican Party says no state is allowed to hold a primary or caucus before February, and only Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina are allowed to hold their primaries in February.
California State Representative Paul Fong talked by telephone about his legislation to shift the state's presidential primary from February to June to potentially save $100 million. California is facing a $6.6 billion budget deficit. Mr. Fong believes his bill will pass the state Assembly and Senate and expects the governor to sign it. Mr. Fong believes that California does not need to hold an early election to wield its influence, arguing candidates will come to the state anyway because of its size.
Katie Blinn talked by telephone about legislation to cancel the 2012 presidential primary in Washington in order to save approximately $10 million. If the proposal is approved, the state would use its caucuses to select national convention delegates.
