Bill Burton and Trevor Potter spoke about the influence of super political action committees (SuperPACs) in the 2012 election. Trevor Potter, general counsel for Senator McCain's 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns, said SuperPACs could play a damaging role in politics, and that without reform, all candidates would have their own SuperPACs. Bill Burton, senior strategist for Priorities USA, a SuperPAC supporting President Obama, supported its ad attacking Mitt Romney's Bain Capital, saying that it brought attention to an important issue in the election. They were interviewed by James Bennet.
The program was opened by a video clip of Trevor Potter on "The Colbert Report" as Stephen Colbert transferred his SuperPAC to Jon Stewart.
This was part of the fourth annual Washington Ideas Forum.*held by [The Atlantic], the Aspen Institute, and the Newseum in the Annenberg Theater.

Justin Elliott talked about ProPublica's "Free the Files" project, which seeks to reveal who is paying for political television advertisements in key "swing" states in the 2012 elections. He also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently began requiring television stations to put information about political ad buys online, although only the top 50 markets are required to do so. Those stations can post the files as image PDFs, resulting in no easy way to search records by the name of the ad buyer from the FCC database.

Corporate Money and Elections

Panelists compared the amount of corporate and union spending in the 2012 elections with prior election cycles following the Supreme Court's decision on [Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission]. Among the topics they discussed was the possibility of Congress passing any campaign finance reform legislation, with all agreeing that the possibility was slim without a major scandal to prod them. They also talked about the importance of small donors, and the influence of super political action committees (super PACs).
Super PACs are independent political committees that support a candidate with unlimited, often anonymous, donations from companies, unions, or individuals.
[Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission] gave corporations and unions the ability to spend unlimited money to elect a candidate

Viewer questions were taken via telephone and electronic devices.
