Fiscal Cliff and the Economy

President Obama spoke at the Daimler Detroit Diesel Plant in Redford, Michigan, about the importance of a strong middle class, and called on Congress to sign legislation to avoid the "fiscal cliff." In his speech he said he wanted a tax code that rewarded companies for creating jobs, pointing to Daimler's $120 million investment that was to create 115 new jobs. He also criticized Michigan's just-passed "right to work" legislation: "These so-called right to work laws, they don't have anything to do with economics. They have everything to do with politics. What they're really talking about is, giving you the right to work for less money."
"Fiscal cliff" referred to impending tax increases and budget cuts at the end of 2012 if Congress failed to reach a new budget agreement.

Book Discussion on [Collision Course]

Joseph McCartin, associate history professor at Georgetown University, recounted the call for an illegal strike by the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) in August 1981 and the subsequent firing of the strikers by President Ronald Reagan. The author recalled the lead-up to the strike for the workers, which included an over-twenty-year fissure with labor management, the union's initial endorsement of President Reagan, and how the outcome of the strike affected public sector unions in the ensuing years. Joseph McCartin responded to questions from members of the audience at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta. The event was co-sponsored by the Georgia State University Library, which holds records from PATCO in its Southern Labor Archives.

Collective Bargaining in Professional Sports

Executive Directors for professional football and basketball players' labor unions talked about collective bargaining rights in sports. National Basketball Players Association director Billy Hunter said that if he had to bet on it, he would wager that the NBA lockout would cost the league the entire 2011-12 season. The NBA locked out its players on July 1st after a recent labor deal expired and then filed a claim against the National Basketball Players Union for unfair labor practices. The NFL had ended a lockout by agreeing to a 10-year deal though collective bargaining ending disputes over splitting revenue and players' rights.
