      <description>Civil rights activists, lawmakers, scholars, and policy analysts gathered to discuss their thoughts and insights on the challenges facing African-Americans. Raymond Brown moderated a question and answer session with the panelists. Topics included the economic stimulus package, perceptions of black youth, and personal accountability. The program included a video message sent the previous day from President Barack Obama. Mr. Smiley introduced his book [Accountable: Making America as Good as Its Promise], published by Atria. This conclusion to the [Covenant] trilogy is a handbook with which the community can evaluate the successes or failures of its political leaders and of itself.</description>

      <description>In the last portion of the State of the Black Union forum, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spoke to the audience about health care, education and her thoughts on her candidacy. She then was questioned by Tavis Smiley. Senator Clinton was the only presidential candidate to accept the invitation to address the forum. 
 
 The forum was sponsored by Tavis Smiley Presents and held in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Conference Auditorium in New Orleans.

      <title>State of the Black Union 2008, Afternoon Session</title>
      <description>Leaders in education, public policy, religion, and black communities discussed the role of the African-American vote in the 2008 presidential election. Topics included the possible election of African-American Democratic candidate Barack Obama to be president; the effects of the presidential election on the social, political, and economic future of African-American communities; and the mortgage crisis and the U.S. economy. The rebuilding of parts of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina was discussed and survivor Herreast Harrison described her experiences and the ways in which she helped others.
 
 In the last portion of the forum Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spoke to the audience about health care, education and her thoughts on her candidacy. They talked about the newly released book [The Covenant in Action], published by Smiley Books. The book, a follow-up to [The Covenant with Black America], demonstrated how ordinary people were finding solutions to the problems still facing blacks in America 400 years later. 
 
 The State of the Black Union 2007: Jamestown, America's 400th Anniversary, was titled "The African American Imprint on America" to commemorate the 400th anniversary of America at Jamestown, Virginia. The event took place in the Convocation Center of Hampton University.

      <title>State of the Black Union 2006:  Defining the Agenda</title>
      <description>In the first panel of an afternoon session of State of the Black Union 2006 titled, "Defining the African American Agenda, Part II," participants focused on the State of the Black Union 2005 proposal for a covenant with black America. Panelists discussed the challenges facing the black community, ideas proposed in the book, [The Covenant with Black America], and future leadership within the black community. They also talked about the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast communities and the significance of poor federal response efforts to the disaster for future national policy. They also responded to questions submitted by members of the audience.
 
 [The Covenant with Black America], published by Third World Press, was edited by Tavis Smiley who moderated the panel. It outlines ten issues identified by the public: education, criminal justice system, police accountability, healthcare and well being, economic development and employment, housing and community development, participating in the democratic process, information technology, rural communities, and environmental justice.

      <description>The morning session of State of the Black Union 2006 titled, "Economic Empowerment: Building and Leveraging Wealth in the African American Community," focused on economic conditions in the black community and methods to empower both individuals and communities. Ms. Martin moderated the panel which addressed the role of corporate, community and religious organizations, the need for civic participation, and individual responsibility. Many panelists also gave practical advice on how black families and businesses could increase their wealth, purchase homes, and take advantage of the tax breaks and investment opportunities that many Americans enjoy. Participants also answered questions submitted by members of the audience.
