Open Phones

Telephone lines were open for comments on House Speaker John Boehner's "Plan B" to avoid "fiscal cliff" impending tax increases and budget cuts at the end of 2012 if Congress cannot reach a new budget agreement. The proposal would allow tax cuts to expire for people making over $1 million per year and keep current tax rates for everyone else.
Jonathan Strong gave an update by phone on the status of "fiscal cliff" negotiations and Speaker Boehner's meeting with rank-and-file members the previous day.
Niels Lesniewski spoke by phone about Senator Patrick Leahy's new role as Senate President Pro Tempore following the death of Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI).
"Fiscal cliff" referred to the impending tax increases and sequestration budget cuts at the end of 2012 if Congress failed to reach a new budget agreement.*"Sequestration," a legal procedure in which automatic budget cuts are triggered, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011.
