The Soldier's Home was founded in 1851 and served as a residence for disabled military veterans in Washington, D.C. Historians talked about the significance of the cottage to President Lincoln, who used it as his Washington wartime refuge and where he developed policies that led to the Emancipation Proclamation.</description>
