Book Discussion on [Impeached]

David O. Stewart talked about his book [Impeached: The Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln's Legacy] (Simon & Schuster; May 12, 2009). In his book he re-creates the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson, which became the central battle in the struggle to reunite a nation after four years of war. Mr. Stewart challenges the traditional version of this pivotal moment in history. Mr. Stewart talked about the research that he did in the National Archives. He responded to questions from members of the audience.
David O. Stewart, an attorney who defended a judge in an impeachment trial before the United States Senate, is also the author of [The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution].
"Impeached: The Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln's Legacy" was part of the noontime 75th Anniversary Author Lecture Series. The lecture was held on September 23, 2009, in the Jefferson Conference Room of the National Archives.

Impeachment of President Andrew Johnson

David O. Stewart talked about his book [Impeached: The Trial of President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln's Legacy] (Simon and Schuster; May 12, 2009). With the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Johnson became in charge of the reconstruction of the defeated South, including the extension of civil rights and suffrage to black Southerners. However, he did not support these views and his impeachment trial of became the central battle of the struggle over how to reunite a nation after four years of war. Mr. Stewart argued that there were compelling reasons to remove Mr. Johnson from the presidency, revealed the corrupt bargains that saved Johnson's job, and credited Johnson's prosecutors with seeking to remake the nation to accord with the ideals that Lincoln championed. Mr. Stewart was interviewed on stage by Elizabeth Varon and then responded to questions from members of the audience.

Book Discussion on [The Case for Impeachment]

Dave Lindorff and Barbara Olshansky talked about their book, [The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. Bush from Office], published by Thomas Dunne Books. At a symposium, the authors argued that President Bush's administration threatens basic freedoms and the American system of checks and balances. The co-authors reviewed several of what they consider impeachable actions by President Bush, including lying to Congress about the need to invade Iraq for possession of weapons of mass destruction, refusing to cooperate with the congressional 9/11 Commission probes, and obstructing justice in protecting the person responsible for revealing that former Ambassador Joseph Wilson's wife Valerie Plame was an undercover CIA operative. The authors suggested that impeachment should be a key issue this election year and impeachment legislation should be submitted to the next House Judiciary Committee. After their presentations the authors responded to audience members' questions.
