Health Care Policy and the States

Governor Gary Herbert (R-UT) talked about his state's efforts to reform health care and ongoing disputes with the federal government over the 2010 health care law, the Affordable Care Act (ACA). He said that although he did not support the ACA, it was the law of the land and that states "must deal with it." He described Utah's health exchanges, based on a free marketplace with consumers deciding the coverage that works best for them. He outlined aspects of the ACA that Utah would not comply with, including not enforcing the individual mandate, administering Medicaid through the health exchange, and the tax credit through the exchange.

Book Discussion on [American Massacre: The Tragedy at Mountain Meadows]

Ms. Denton talked about her book [American Massacre: The Tragedy at Mountain Meadows, September 1857], published by Knopf. The book reopens the controversy over an attack in Utah on Arkansas pioneers in which 140 men, women, and children were slaughtered. She said that Mormon Church leaders blamed the attack on a group of local Indians, and that John Lee, a Mormon, was eventually executed for his role in the massacre. Ms. Denton contended that the ultimate responsibility rested with Mormon Church leader Brigham Young. Ms. Denton read from her book, explained why she decided to write it, and answered questions from the audience.
