The state's legislature passed the law in February to prompt a court challenge expecting the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn its 1973 [Roe v. Wade] decision that legalized abortion. Representative Herseth won a special election to fill the remainder of Representative Janklow's term. Larry Diedrich, first elected to the South Dakota Senate in 1996,  lost the special election to her in June.</description>
