The statue by French sculptor Achille-Joseph Valois was commissioned by the king's daughter, Marie-Therese, and originally unveiled in Montpellier, France, about 1829. He was shot January 30, 1900, as he approached the capitol where his disputed election was being decided. He was sworn in the next day and died February 3, 1900.
