50th Anniversary of 1960 West Virginia Democratic Primary

On the 50th anniversary of the 1960 West Virginia Democratic primary, Kennedy aides Richard Donahue, Charlie Peters, Ted Sorenson, and journalist David Broder shared their memories of the 1960 campaign with moderator Tom Oliphant. That primary election marked a turning point in Senator John F. Kennedy's bid to win the nomination for president against Senator Hubert H. Humphrey. Senator Kennedy's landslide victory in the state proved that a Catholic could be a viable candidate for president contrary to conventional wisdom at the time. A video clip of a campaign ad was shown in which Senator Kennedy responded to a question at a campaign event at Marshall University about whether his loyalties would be divided between his church and the state. After their discussion the panelists responded to questions from members of the audience.
This was a Kennedy Forum event held at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum.

French Parliament Debate on Banning Facial Veils

On July 13th, 2010 France's lower house of parliament passed a ban on facial veils, including the full-body burqa worn by many Muslim women. The vote was 335 to 1. The bill must pass the French Senate in order to become law. If the bill is made into law, penalties include a $190 fine and/or completion of a citizenship course. Forcing a woman to wear a face-covering veil could result in a one-year jail sentence and/or a $38,000 fine. The French Parliament is one of several parliaments that have debated measures banning facial veils, including Italy, Belgium and Spain.
Elaine Ganley provided background into the issue. Following the interview, the French parliament debates the proposal.

Jurgen Matthaus and Mark Roseman recall the Eastern European Jewish population's thoughts on the rise of Adolf Hitler from 1933 to 1938. The editors culled their findings from a collection of Jewish diaries and letters that questioned if Hitler's tenure would pass without need for concern, if he was as radical as believed, and if Jews needed to leave their home countries out of concern for their lives. Jurgen Matthaus and Mark Roseman were joined by a group of Holocaust survivors who read from letters and diary entries at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.
