Ms. Gutmann talked about her book [The Kinder, Gentler Military: Can America's Gender-Neutral Fighting Force Still Win Wars?], published by Scribner. The book examines the 'new military,' arguing that the reforms of the 1990s emphasized political correctness over combat readiness and that complete integration of women into the military is physically and sociologically impossible. In preparing for the book, Stephanie Gutmann interviewed male and female members of the armed forces and concluded that pursuit of this unrealistic ideal has had a demoralizing effect on soldiers of both sexes.
