Q&A with Heidi Ewing

Heidi Ewing, co-director and co-producer with Rachel Grady of the documentary film [Detropia], discussed the premise of the film, which seeks to highlight the continuing deterioration of Detroit. She talked about Detroit's dramatic decrease in population over the past fifty years and stated that an additional fifty percent of the remaining population would leave immediately if given the opportunity. She highlighted Detroit Mayor Dave Bing's efforts to bring the city's financial situation under control. She suggested that Detroit is not alone with its problems, and the United States may be heading for an era of failed cities. She reacted to a video clip of "Q&A with Clarance Lusane" about the 1967 riots. Video clips from the film were shown including illegal "scrappers" who stripped metal from abandoned factories, a local blogger who explores empty buildings, and two artists who recently moved to Detroit in search of an inexpensive home and a place to experiment with their art.

Post-World War II Growth of Suburbs

History Professor Andrew Morris discusses the unprecedented demand for affordable housing from the mid-1940s and into the 1950s that was created by returning World War II veterans. Professor Morris explains that the building of new homes had slowed during the Great Depression and during World War II, when materials were rationed. As thousands of veterans came home and started families-and the country experienced an economic upswing-the demand for new housing skyrocketed, resulting in the dramatic growth of U.S. suburbs. Video clips of promotional films and newsreels of the period were shown, as well as other slides.

It was originally intended to be the "perfect industrial city" but after oil was discovered at Spindletop in 1901, the rapid influx of businessmen, oilfield workers, prostitutes, and others made that plan impossible.
C-SPAN's Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their "2012 LCV Cities Tour" in Beaumont, Texas, on January 9-13 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Time-Warner Cable local cable affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed.
Real Estate Markets

Shiela Bair and banking officials spoke about the state of the real estate market. In her remarks Chairman Bair said that the current "robo-signing" situation underscored the severity of the financial crisis and that much more was needed to revitalize real estate markets.
Robo-signing refers to recent allegations that service providers were relying on shoddy documentation and skirting legal procedures, foreclosing on properties without sufficient authority, or even reading the relevant documents. These reports led three large money center banks to temporarily halt foreclosures and the sale of owned real estate as attorneys general called for a nationwide moratorium.
