      <title>Volunteerism and Serve America Act</title>
      <description>Patrick Corvington talked about the role and impact of volunteering and community service in the U.S. National Volunteer Week (April 18 - 24) marks the first anniversary of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. President Obama, a former community organizer, signed the act on April 21, 2009. The legislation aims to triple the number of Americans in national service programs and triple the number of AmeriCorps volunteers to 250,000 by 2017. Mr. Corvington also responded to telephone calls and electronic communications.

      <title>American Leadership</title>
      <description>Eric Greitens spoke on the topic, "Building the Future: How Iraq, War, and the Humanitarian Ethic Are Shaping the Next Generation of American Leadership." He emphasized the need to be inspired by big ideas, such as the protection of human rights, the promotion of democracy, and the protection of the innocent. He said it was vital to understand the challenges we face, such as maintaining America's moral leadership in the world. He talked about his deployment to Iraq and his work in war zones around the world. He responded to audience members' questions, as well as to questions sent by electronic mail from audience members at other locations.
 
 His doctoral thesis, [Children First], investigated the ways in which international humanitarian organizations can best serve war-affected children. He has worked as a humanitarian volunteer, documentary photographer, and researcher in Croatia, Rwanda, Zaire, the Gaza Strip, Albania, Cambodia, Mexico, Bolivia, and India. His award-winning documentary photographs were featured in the book, [Community Strategies for Healing]. Mr. Greitens is also a U.S. Navy SEAL officer and he has deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, and Southeast Asia. In 2005-2006 he served as a White House Fellow. 
  
 The "Issues for the 21st Century" series takes place in the Missouri Court of Appeals courtroom in the historic Old Post Office in downtown St. Louis.</description>

      <description>The Merage Foundation for the American Dream held its fourth annual National Leadership Awards dinner. Mr. Eizenstat presented awards to immigrants to the United States who have made major contributions to the country. Former Ambassador Francis Deng received a public policy award, Pulitzer Prize-winner Jack Rosenthal received an award for journalism, Shirley Tilghman received an education award, and Jerry Yang received an award for entrepreneurship. The twelve university students who received American Dream fellowships were introduced. 
 
 President Tilghman was unable to attend and a video of her acceptance remarks was shown.
 
 The event was held at the National Press Club.</description>

      <title>Memorial Service for Eli Segal</title>
      <description>A memorial service was held for Eli J. Segal, who died in February. Mr.. Segal headed President Clinton's national service program after serving as his 1992 campaign chief of staff. After working in the Clinton administration Mr. Segal joined City Year, a national service organization that was founded in Boston in 1988. Former President Clinton said that it was the inspiration for the AmeriCorps program.
 
 The service was held at George Washington University.
 
 Arnie Kanter was misidentified as a former Undersecretary of State.</description>

      <description>President Bush spoke at a celebration of African American History Month and presented the President's Volunteer Service Awards. He praised African American civil rights pioneers, including recent Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice. He talked about the accomplishments of the No Child Left Behind program and the successes of the many African American entrepreneurs and professionals and all who serve as role models and mentors to children. 
 
 He presented the President's Volunteer Service Awards to Carl Anderson, a Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity volunteer in Washington, DC; Carl and Katie Ball, volunteers with Youth Engaged in Service in Jackson, Mississippi; Steve Ellis, a volunteer with I.B.M.'s National Black Family Technology Awareness Program in Texas; and Joan Thomas, a volunteer with Cool Girls, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia.</description>

      <description>Douglas Brinkley talked about the book he co-wrote with Julie Fenster, [Parish Priest:  Father Michael McGivney and American Catholicism], published by William Morrow. The book profiles the life and career of Father Michael McGivney, who is under consideration for sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church. Father McGivney (1852-1890) entered the seminary at the age of sixteen and later founded the Knights of Columbus to help impoverished communities in 1882. Mr. Brinkley described Father McGivney's legacy and attempted to explain why he may be the first American-born parish priest to be declared a saint by the Vatican. After his presentation he answered audience members' questions.</description>

      <description>Mr. Vasquez spoke on the anniversary of President Kennedy's speech announcing the formation of the Peace Corps. Mr. Vasquez became director of the organization in 2002. The Peace Corps currently oversees more than 7,500 volunteers who serve in 71 different countries. Mr. Vasquez talked about how the Peace Corps has evolved since its inception, and noted that its mission "to promote global peace and friendship" is vital in today's world. He spoke about the efforts of Peace Corps volunteers in Muslim countries, noting that of the 71 nations currently served by the Peace Corps, 18 are predominantly Muslim. Mr. Vasquez enlivened his remarks with anecdotes of the experiences of current and former volunteers as well as those aided by the Peace Corps. Following his speech, he responded to questions from the audience.</description>
