      <title>Mary Todd Lincoln Retrial</title>
      <description>Chicago judges retried Mary Todd Lincoln under 2012 Illinois law and asked the audience to decide if she should have been involuntarily committed to an asylum. In 1875, ten years after she left the White House following President Lincoln's assassination, Mary Todd Lincoln was found to be insane by a jury in Chicago. Her son, Robert Todd Lincoln, signed a petition to have her involuntarily committed to an insane asylum, and she was taken to a sanitarium in Illinois where she stayed for several months before her release.

      <description>Veterans, mental health advocates , and Veterans Affairs (VA) officials testified on their efforts to improve access to and the quality of mental and physical health care services for veterans. Since the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq suicide and post traumatic stress disorder rates among veterans had increased significantly. Topics included new VA mental health programs, using smart phone technology to stay connected with veterans after they return home, the stigma of seeking mental health assistance, providing veterans with a sense of mission and peer support in their communities, and alternate mental health approaches.</description>

      <title>State of Mental Health Care System</title>
      <description>Federal, state, and local mental health officials testified on weaknesses in the mental health care system, with a focus on relationships between mental health and gun violence in the wake of the December 2012 shootings at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school. The hearing examined the mental health system and barriers to providing mental health care. 
In the first panel, administrators talked about changes in the health care system. Pamela Hyde said that the U.S. mental health system has huge gaps in services that prevent people with mental illnesses from receiving treatment. In the second panel mental health practitioners gave examples of community situations. Topics included the stigma associated with mental health and the importance of employment and peer support, and that that mental Illness is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. Panelists also highlighted how current funds could be better spent better and obstacles to getting mental health services to those in need.</description>

      <title>Military Suicide Prevention Task Force Report</title>
      <description>The Armed Services Suicide Prevention Task Force presented its final report. The report contained a number of finding and included recommendations to overhaul the Department of Defense's ability to react to increasing suicide rates and detect potential problems. 
Congress established the panel in August 2009 to study the issue of suicides in the military. The group has seven members from the military and seven members with professional suicide prevention and mental health backgrounds.</description>

      <title>Army Suicide Prevention</title>
      <description>Army Vice Chief of Staff Peter Chiarelli spoke with reporters and answered questions following the release of a 15-month study of the increasing rate of suicides in the force. In his remarks he said that the overall Army suicide rate had been driven up by the 21 percent of suicides committed by soldiers with multiple deployments, but acknowledged that 79 percent of Army suicides were by service members who had one or no deployments. He also talked about recommendations in the report for tightened enlistment standards, expanded mental health screening, a confidential alcohol treatment program, and better coordination between primary care physicians and mental health counselors. Several questions also focused on portions of the report that found surprising instances of drug an alcohol abuse among the armed forces.</description>

Psychiatric service dogs in the audience were pointed out. Following Colonel Ritchie's remarks, Vietnam War veteran Ron Morton unexpectedly stepped up to the podium and spoke about soldiers committing suicide and the increase of veterans with AIDS and HIV. He argued that the Veterans Administration is not doing enough for veterans with PTSD. After the panelists' prepared remarks, they responded to audience members' questions.</description>
