Book Discussion on [And the Money Kept Rolling In (and Out)]

Mr. Blustein talked about his book [And the Money Kept Rolling In (and Out): Wall Street, the IMF, and the Bankrupting of Argentina], published by PublicAffairs. The book described the economic collapse of Argentina in 2001. The author contended that in the late 1990s Argentina employed new policies that were in keeping with the ideologies of the International Monetary Fund, Wall Street financial institutions, and the World Bank. When Argentina failed to successfully implement these policies, the result was a complete collapse of not only the economic infrastructure but the government as well, leaving millions in financial ruin. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience.

Political System of Argentina

Rep. Ullado and Undersecretary Corach, both members of the Argentine government, spoke on their country's political system, elections, and government. The Argentine government, loosely based on the United States system of government, has undergone a number of military coups in its history but is now based on a Constitutional system. Argentina's Parliament is made up of a House with 254 directly elected representatives and a Senate of 48 indirectly elected members. Undersecretary Corach said Argentina was currently undergoing privatization of a number of industries, including the airports, television, and gas stations, led by the "economic revolution" of the current Argentine president. A short videotape from the Chamber of Deputies in Buenos Aires showed the Argentine president addressing a session of the Argentine parliament.
