A panel discussion was held on relations with North Korea.
Former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia Evans Revere said relations with North Korea might be heading toward a new phase after weeks of threats from the Kim regime. Panelists:
Evans Revere, Senior Director, Albright Stonebridge Group, Former Acting Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific
Chang-gi Kim, Publisher / Executive Editor, Chosun Weekly
Jung-Chan Park, Former President, Yonhap News
Moderator: David Pong
"Prospects for U.S.-Korea Cooperation on North Korea" was the second panel of the forum "Assessing the U.S.-Korea Relationship: Looking Ahead" co-hosted by the Hanmi Club and the Korea Economic Institute of America.

North Korea had announced that North Korea could not guarantee the safety of diplomats in embassies after April 10, 2013. The previous day the State Department spoke to the Swedish Embassy in North Korea to see if they were changing their status on being the U.S. protecting power in North Korea and was told nothing would change.

Defense Department Briefing

Pentagon spokesman George Little denied reports that the U.S. had positioned war ships off the coast of North Korea, as well as a sea-based radar system capable of countering North Korean missile launches. He described the ships as being on a "missile defense mission," and said the radar system was undergoing a number of tests. At the day's briefing, Mr. Little also said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel planned to give back a portion of his salary in response to civilian furloughs brought on by the "sequester" budget cuts.
"Sequestration," a legal procedure in which every federal agency has the same percentage of its budget taken back in order to cut deficit spending, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011 and began March 1, 2013.

Q&A with Blaine Harden

Blaine Harden discussed his historical narrative [Escape From Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West]. The book tells the story of Shin Dong-hyuk, who was born in captivity at North Korea prison camp 14 and escaped in 2005. Mr. Harden said he was the only individual actually born in a labor camp to escape. Shin escaped through an electrified fence by climbing over a dead companion's body. Mr. Harden explained that Camp 14 holds approximately 15,000 prisoners and is the toughest of North Korea's six camps due to the brutal working conditions and vigilance of the guards. He related Shin's witnessing the execution of his mother and brother. Harden detailed Shin's adjustment to society and civilization, and their meeting for a newspaper story.
Blaine Harden currently reports for PBS Frontline and contributes to [The Economist]. He was a [Washington Post] and [New York Times] correspondent, and a writer for [Time] Magazine.
