Defense Department Briefing

Pentagon spokesman George Little denied reports that the U.S. had positioned war ships off the coast of North Korea, as well as a sea-based radar system capable of countering North Korean missile launches. He described the ships as being on a "missile defense mission," and said the radar system was undergoing a number of tests. At the day's briefing, Mr. Little also said Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel planned to give back a portion of his salary in response to civilian furloughs brought on by the "sequester" budget cuts.
"Sequestration," a legal procedure in which every federal agency has the same percentage of its budget taken back in order to cut deficit spending, was agreed to in the Budget Control Act of 2011 and began March 1, 2013.
