      <description>Acting Commissioner Steven Miller and Inspector General J. Russell George testified about revelations that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had applied additional scrutiny to groups applying for tax-exempt status that had the words "Tea Party" or "patriot" in their names. They also talked about the inspector general's report on the practice, and answered sometimes pointed questions about previous statements to Congress.
Commissioner Miller tendered his resignation two days earlier in the wake of the revelations.</description>

      <title>January 2013 Tax Increases</title>
      <description>Panelists talked about the impact on taxpayers if Congress allows the economy to fall off the "fiscal cliff," referring to impending tax increases and budget cuts at the end of 2012 if lawmakers fail to reach a new budget agreement. A new Tax Policy Center report said that middle income families would pay about $2000 dollars more in taxes in 2013 if the tax increases occur.
Douglas Holtz-Eakin advocated for Congress agreeing to a temporary extension of current policy while Robert Greenstein argued that allowing the the tax cuts to expire would be worth the benefits of a long-term solution.</description>

The pledge is a promise made by elected officials and political candidates to not raise taxes. Both Mr. Douthat and Mr. Norquist noted the pledge's impact on tax policy, the elections, and the Republican Party. Mr. Norquist in his remarks blamed President George H.W. Bush's 1992 election loss on his decision to raise taxes. Mr. Douthat argued that every tax cut with an increase in spending is in effect a tax increase, using the eight years of the George W.
