Despite this, Mr. Unger argues that Machiavelli was a deeply humane writer whose controversial theories were a response to the corruption he witnessed around him. He also speaks of his own time spent living in Florence, along with the roots of his deep interest in studying the Italian Renaissance. Miles J.
