      <title>The Gulf Coast and Natural and Human-Caused Disasters</title>
      <description>Panelists talked about the various natural and human-made issues impacting the Gulf Coast, including potential future disasters. U.S. Geological Survey Director Marcia McNutt said that people should not live below sea-level due to "extreme events" and the gradual rise of sea level. In addition, the panel discussed potential vulnerabilities to hurricanes and other disasters due to loss in wetlands and degradation of ecological barriers. 
"The Gulf Coast: Diverse Converging Issues" was a plenary session of 13th National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment, titled "Disasters and Environment: Science, Preparedness, and Resilience," held for three days in the Ronald Reagan Building by the National Council for Science and the Environment.</description>

      <title>BP Oil Spill Settlement</title>
      <description>Justice Department and other law enforcement officials held a press conference in New Orleans regarding new criminal charges and a settlement in the BP oil spill. Attorney General Holder outlined the 14 charges which included 11 counts of manslaughter and one obstruction of justice. He also said that BP agreed to a $4.5 billion settlement which would be disbursed to federal agencies for restoration, preservation and conservation. Other investigations into civil and criminal charges remained open.</description>

      <description>Officials held a telephone conference call with news media regarding federal, state, and local preparations for Hurricane Sandy, which was expected to make landfall later that evening. They answered questions on a number of issues such as evacuation orders, the likely damage the storm would bring to various affected areas, and federal assistance available to local areas.
This program was audio only with the official speaking indicated on screen. A live scene of Washington, D.C., was also shown during this 2:30 p.m. EDT call.</description>

      <title>Interior Department Inspector General Oversight</title>
      <description>Mary Kendall testified on her involvement in the Obama administration's temporary freeze on deepwater drilling after the BP's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.       <title>Public Meeting on U.S.-Canada Pipeline</title>
      <description>Citizens spoke at the final State Department public hearing concerning the TransCanada Keystone Pipeline Proposal, which, if approved, would transport oil from Alberta, Canada, through six states with final transfer points in Houston and Port Arthur, Texas. Those who spoke against the plan said there were too many health and environmental risks for the State Department to issue a permit for the company. Proponents said the pipeline could be built safely with strict environmental guidelines all while creating thousands of jobs for the economy. There were boos and chants sporadically throughout the hearing.</description>

Ralph Nader discussed his political novel with two of the billionaires depicted in his book, businessmen and philanthropists Ted Turner and Peter Lewis.
This "LIVE from the NYPL" event was held at Celeste Bartos Forum of the New York Public Research Library of Humanities and Social Sciences following the publication of an abridged version of the novel.</description>

      <title>Safety of U.S. Nuclear Facilities</title>
      <description>Members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held a meeting on Japan's nuclear power plant crisis, the potential threat of radiation exposure to U.S. territories, and the safety of  U.S. reactors. NRC Executive Director Bill Borchardt said the Fukushima nuclear plant was on the verge of being stabilized. Other topics included the infrastructure needed to respond property to earthquakes or other disasters, possible causes of the explosions at Japan's plants, and the differences in safety precautions between U.S. and Japanese plants.
At the conclusion of the meeting, NRC Director of Public Affairs Eliot Brenner responded to questions from reporters.</description>

      <title>Presidential Remarks on Climate Change</title>
      <description>President Obama delivered remarks at a United Nations summit on climate change. In his remarks he aid the U.S. had been among the nations "slow to respond to or even recognize the magnitude of the climate threat," and spoke about actions he had taken in the first few months of his presidency to counter global warming. 
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon convened a climate change summit to focus heads of state on the urgent need for action on global climate change, and to mobilize political will needed to reach a agreement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009.</description>
