Book Discussion on [The Rape of Nanking]

Ms. Chang talked about her book, [The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II], published by Basic Books. The book documents the atrocities visited upon the people of Nanking by the Japanese military during the early years of World War II. She describes Nanking as a laboratory in which Japanese soldiers were taught to slaughter unarmed, unresisting civilians, and that they used these tactics later throughout Asia. Ms. Chang argues that the Japanese government should pay reparations and apologize for its army's actions. Some of the graphic photographs in the book were displayed.
Ms. Chang is a journalist.

Book Discussion on [Gulag: A History ]

Ms. Applebaum talked about her book [Gulag: A History], published by Doubleday.
Nearly 30 million prisoners passed through the Soviet Union's labor camps in their more than 60 years of operation. This is the first fully documented history of the gulag, drawn on newly accessible Soviet archives as well as scores of camp memoirs and interviews with survivors to trace the gulag's origins and expansion. It describes how, largely under Stalin's watch, a regulated, centralized system of prison labor-unprecedented in scope-gradually arose out of the chaos of the Russian Revolution. Fueled by waves of arrests, this prison labor came to underpin the Soviet economy. Ms. Applebaum also reflected on why the gulag does not loom as large in the Western imagination as, for instance, the Holocaust.

Book Discussion on [World on Fire]

Ms. Chua talked about her book [World on Fire: How Exporting Free Market Democracy Breeds Ethnic Hatred and Global Instability], published by Doubleday. While proponents of globalization believe that exporting free markets and democracy to other countries will increase peace and prosperity throughout the developing world Ms. Chua shows that just the opposite has happened. When global markets open, ethnic conflict worsens and politics turns ugly and violent. She gives examples from around the world of how free markets do not spread wealth evenly throughout the whole of developing societies. Instead they produce a new class of extremely wealthy individuals who are almost always members of a minority group such as Chinese in the Philippines, Indians in East Africa, and whites in Latin America. These wealthy minorities then become a target of violent hatred. Adding democracy to this volatile mix unleashes suppressed ethnic hatreds and brings to power ethno-nationalist governments that pursue aggressive policies of confiscation and revenge. Ms. Chua further shows how individual countries are often viewed as dominant minorities, explaining the phenomena of ethnic resentment in the Arab-Israeli conflict and the rising tide of anti-American sentiment around the world. She believes that this more than anything accounts for the visceral hatred of Americans that has been expressed in recent acts of terrorism.

Mr. Coram talked about his book [Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War], published by Little, Brown and Company. The late Colonel John Boyd, United States Air Force, began his career as a supremely proficient fighter pilot in the Korean War, after which he went on to develop the concept of energy maneuvering that has been the basis for fighter tactics and designs for 30 years. He proceeded militantly to advocate simpler fighter designs and attracted a group of like-minded civilian and uniformed reformers. After his retirement, he developed strategic concepts based on the velocity of attack. On the personal front, Boyd, the product of a dysfunctional family, generated another, and his abrasive personality led him to have a turbulent career. Film clips were also shown.

Clifford Stoll enthusiastically discussed his discovery and tracking
of a West German computer spy who "broke" into his institution's
computer network to access other networks throughout the U.S. In
[The Cuckoo's Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer
Espionage], Stoll details the story involving Markus Hess, who sold
the stolen information from U.S. military networks to the Soviet
Union before being caught and eventually indicted.

Stoll's animated personality adds to the discussion of his background
and views on computer crime. Between yo-yo tricks and sharing a
favorite cookie recipe, he tells his experience of giving
congressional testimony and of working with federal agents to track
the spy. Now an expert in computer security, Stoll has spoken to many
government agencies, universities and other organizations on the
subject.

Book Discussion on [Reading Lolita in Tehran]

Ms. Nafisi talked about her book [Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books], published by Random House. Professor Nafisi resigned from her job as a professor of English literature at a university in Tehran due to repressive policies in 1995. For two years before she left Iran in 1997, Ms. Nafisi gathered seven young women at her house every Thursday morning to read and discuss forbidden works of Western literature. They were all former students from diverse backgrounds whom she had taught at the university. They learned to use this forum to speak more freely, not only about the novels they were reading but for debating the social, cultural, and political realities of living under strict Islamic rule. Professor Nafiasi talked about the early days of the revolution, when she first started teaching at the University of Tehran amid protests and demonstrations. Then women were forced to wear the veil at university and eventually separated in class from men as bombs fell outside. In her book Professor Nafisi mixes literary analyses with her observations of the growing oppressive environment of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Her book looks at primarily Western classics through the eyes of women and men living in a very different culture and at the power of literature to illuminate life.

Book Discussion on [Reefer Madness: Sex, Drugs, and Cheap Labor]

Mr. Schlosser talked about his book [Reefer Madness: Sex, Drugs, and Cheap Labor in the American Black Market], published by Houghton Mifflin Co.
The book reports on America's underground economic activity, which, according to him, constitutes 9 to 10 percent of this country's economy, millions of dollars that "cannot be accounted for." The black market in the U.S. "is where economic activities remain off the books, where they are unrecorded, unreported, and in violation of the law." The book focuses on three major black-market arenas: marijuana, the most widely used illegal drug in the U.S.; migrant workers in California, most of them illegal immigrants; and the pornography industry. It also examines their effect on all of society.

Book Discussion on [What Went Wrong]

Bernard Lewis talked about his book [What Went Wrong? Western Impact and Middle Eastern Response], published by Oxford University Press. His book examines the anguished reaction of the Islamic world as it tried to understand why things had changed, how Islamic culture had been overtaken, overshadowed, and to an increasing extent dominated by the West. Lewis provides a fascinating portrait of a culture in turmoil. He shows how the Middle East turned its attention to understanding European weaponry and military tactics, commerce and industry, government and diplomacy, education and culture. Lewis highlights the striking differences between the Western and Middle Eastern cultures from the 18th to the 20th centuries through thought-provoking comparisons of such things as Christianity and Islam, music and the arts, the position of women, secularism and the civil society, the clock and the calendar.

Mr. Bix talked about his book [Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan], published by HarperCollins. The book describes the enigmatic emperor whose sixty-three-year reign led Japan into the modern world. Mr. Bix talked about the history of Japan before and after Hirohito ascended the throne, saying that he was trained from birth to be emperor and to have divine status. Hirohito's image was that of a reluctant, passive monarch, but with a combination of Japanese imperial tradition and a modern scientific worldview, the young emperor gradually evolved. He aligned himself with the growing ultranationalist movement, perpetuated a cult of religious emperor worship, and resisted attempts to curb his power. Mr. Bix lived for many years in Japan. He explained how he researched the biography there and wrote it.
