Book Discussion on [Why Read?]

Professor Edmundson talks about his book [Why Read?], published by Bloomsbury USA. The book is on the relationship between a liberal arts education and literature. The author writes that literature needs to be the fundamental element of the liberal arts education because of the benefits books offer their readers. Mr. Edmundson also claims that current educational trends have either misused or neglected to recognize the vital role reading plays in a well-rounded liberal arts education. He talked about the value of fiction and non-fiction literature.

This was the last program in the fifteen-year [Booknotes] series, and Mr. Edmundson commented on several authors' ideas and writing styles as clips of their remarks on previous programs were shown.

Mr. Worrall talked about his book [The Poet and the Murderer: The True Story of Literary Crime and the Art of Forgery], published by E.P. Dutton. In it, he tells the story of Mark Hoffman, a literary forger and murderer in the late 20th century. As a young Mormon boy, he saw hypocrisy in his religion and devised ways to undermine the church. He forged rare Mormon coins and eventually began forging documents that caused disorder throughout the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His most famous deception, however, was his Emily Dickinson poem, which stunned the literary world and earned him thousands of dollars from the most distinguished of Dickinson scholars. In an attempt to keep his forgery a secret, he committed many acts of violence, including murder.

Book Discussion on [The Boy Genius and the Mogul]

Daniel Stashower talked about his biography of Philo Farnsworth, [The Boy Genius and the Mogul: The Untold Story of Television], published by Broadway Books. Mr. Farnsworth was 14 years old when he came up with the idea that would eventually become the modern television and continued his inventions with the limited help of private financial backers. Mr. Farnsworth produced the first all-electronic television image in 1927, and later patented his invention. However, media mogul David Sarnoff, the head of RCA at the time, used vast resources in an attempt to lead the way in television pioneering. He and his chief scientist received credit for the invention. Throughout most of his life Philo Farnsworth battled David Sarnoff and RCA in patent cases as to being the creator of television. The author talked about the lives of both men and their struggle to bring television to the masses.

Emily Bernard talked about the book she edited, [Remember Me to Harlem: The Letters of Langston Hughes and Carl Van Vechten, 1925-1964], published by Knopf. The book describes the nearly forty-year friendship between the two men through their letters. Langston Hughes was a black poet, playwright and Harlem Renaissance luminary. Carl Van Vechten was a white photographer with a patrician background who served as patron to many black artists. The friendship endured despite the publication of Mr. Van Vechten's novel [Nigger Heaven] that was believed by critics to be exploitative of black culture. The correspondence, which ended upon Mr. Van Vechten's death in 1964, ranged from gossip about other Harlem Renaissance cultural figures to politics to discussions of literature and plays. The book contains sixty photographs, some by Mr. Van Vechten, of Langston Hughes, publisher Alfred Knopf, James Baldwin and other Harlem alumni such as Zora Neale Hurston and Arna Bontemps.

Book Discussion on [Orwell: Wintry Conscience of a Generation]

Mr. Meyers talked about his biography, [Orwell: Wintry Conscience of a Generation], published by W.W. Norton and Co. The book explores the complex personal history of the writer and political thinker whose visionary work produced the great anti-utopias of twentieth-century literature . Meyers draws on a close study of the new edition of George Orwell's Complete Works, interviews with his family and friends, and unpublished material in the Orwell Archive in London. A child of the waning British Empire, Orwell came to reject the stifling class system of his birth, and through his writing forged a new social consciousness that continues to engage modern intellectual thought. Meyers's work also reveals Orwell's human failings, including his childhood insecurities, his political dilemmas, and his conflicted relationships with women.

Book Discussion on [Me and Ted Against the World]

Mr. Schonfeld talked about his memoir [Me and Ted Against the World : The Unauthorized Story of the Founding of CNN], published by Cliff Street Books. The book is full of anecdotes about the founding the world's first 24-hour news network with media mogul Ted Turner in 1979. A longtime TV and print journalist, Schonfeld was president for three years until he was fired by Turner after a clash of egos and largely forgotten within CNN's institutional memory. Schonfeld maintains that as it hit the airwaves on June 1, 1980, CNN was largely his creation: he devised its revolutionary "fluid news" style and assembled the initial staff. With only a shoestring budget, Schonfeld used creative methods to scoop the competition.

Book Discussion on [Ghost Light: A Memoir]

Mr. Rich talked about his book, [Ghost Light: A Memoir], published by Random House. He explained that the book is a memoir of his boyhood during the 1950s and early 1960s. Feeling unhappy and isolated because of his parents' divorce, the Broadway theater was the one thing that made him happy. Eventually he found a second home as a ticket-taker with the National Theatre in Washington, DC, where he was introduced to a real-life cast of characters who would become his mentors and friends. The title refers to the superstition that if an emptied theater is ever left completely dark, a ghost will take up residence. To prevent this, a single "ghost light" is left burning at center stage after the audience and all of the actors and musicians have gone home.

Mr. Parini examined the source notes of this biographer that contradict many of his own stories. Mr. Parini talked about the tragedies and difficult circumstances of Frost's life and strived to present a more balanced view. Photographs from the book were shown, and a brief video clip of the inauguration of President Kennedy.
