Book Discussion on [America's Right Turn]

Mr. Viguerie talked about his book [America's Right Turn: How Conservatives Used New and Alternative Media to Take Powe]r, published by Bonus Books. He traced the success of conservative politicians and theorists, tying it to changes in political media. Pres. Reagan's initial success, according to Mr. Viguerie, can be attributed to his use of direct mail to bypass traditional news media. He traced the roots of his conservative allegiance to his youth in the late 1940s. He discussed the growth of talk radio during the Reagan Administration, as well as more recent "alternative media" such as the Internet and film.

Mr. Morris talked about his book [Fraud of the Century: Rutherford B. Hayes, Samuel Tilden, and the Stolen Election of 1876], published by Simon and Schuster. In 1876, New York Democrat Samuel Tilden almost certainly won the popular vote over Ohio Republican Rutherford B. Hayes. But contested returns in Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina, as well as a legal issue in Oregon, eventually led to a 15-member congressional commission awarding Hayes all 20 contested electoral votes, giving him a one-vote victory in the Electoral College.

The campaign featured four different candidates that represented the full spectrum of political ideology of the time, with incumbent Harry Truman challenged by Thomas Dewey, Henry Wallace, and Strom Thurman. He details the tactics used by Truman to win the election, that he was widely predicted to lose handily to Republican New York Governor Thomas Dewey, and how those tactics eventually led to problems affecting his next term and America as a whole.

Mr. Greenberg talked about his recent book, [Middle Class Dreams], published by Times Books. It focuses on how "middle class" Americans have become alienated from the current political system and how they can influence the next election. He believes that this new majority has changed the two party dynamic, the Republicans being pro-business and the Democrats being pro-"little guy," which he dates back to the election of 1896. Much of his research was based on focus groups, small discussion forums where pre-selected people could freely express themselves on a variety of political issues.

Book Discussion on [Failure Is Impossible: Susan B. Anthony]

The author discussed her book [Failure Is Impossible: Susan B. Anthony In Her Own Words], published by Times Books. Marking the 175th anniversary of Ms. Anthony's birth and the 75th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote, the book depicts the most famous suffragist through her own written and spoken words. "We (women) now have nearly equality of rights everywhere. They let us work everywhere, but only give us half pay," she wrote in the 1800s. More responsible than anyone for getting women the vote, she also dealt with many issues still crucial to women today: equal opportunity, political representation, domestic violence, child rearing, and financial autonomy. Ms. Anthony crisscrossed the country to give speeches and lead rallies well into her eighties.

After several months of interviewing Perot supporters around the U.S., she wrote about "Perotism," which is neither conservative nor liberal, but a very enthusiastic grassroots campaign to improve politics and government in the U.S. Ms. Barta believes the reason Ross Perot dropped out of the presidential campaign in July 1992 was because he had always considered himself a humanist, but political writers had begun to imply that he was a racist. The support of his followers continued after the November 1992 election.

Book Discussion on [See How They Run]

[See How They Run: Electing the President in an Age of Mediaocracy] was discussed by the author, Paul Taylor. As a political correspondent for the [Washington Post], Mr. Taylor covered the 1988 presidential election from start to finish. The book includes profiles of the major party campaigns and candidates, and commentary on why the major players (the candidates, press and public) bring out the worst in each other. He described political campaigns as being "long, nasty, and even trivial." However, the American political process is not without hope. He concludes his book with possible "fixes" and even suggests that the state of world politics or the economy may be such that change will be sparked on its own.

The former head of CBS news in the 1950's, Sig Mickelson discusses issues surrounding his book, [From Whistle Stop to Sound Bite: Four Decades of Politics and Television.] He addresses his career and the evolution of network news coverage since his days with CBS. He focuses on technological change and the competition it produces between newspaper, cable, and telephone industries. Mickelson also analyzes the effect of TV coverage on the U.S. electorate. He attributes a decline in voter turnout since the 1950's to an increasing complexity of issues and a lack of development of major issues by the media. Currently a professor of journalism at San Diego State University, Mickelson concludes the interview by sharing his thoughts on the future of the network news industry.

They specifically focus on the role of the campaign managers and point out the "defining events" leading up to the election. They share particularly interesting stories of the actual interviews that they conducted with candidates and managers.
