Book Discussion on [Why Read?]

Professor Edmundson talks about his book [Why Read?], published by Bloomsbury USA. The book is on the relationship between a liberal arts education and literature. The author writes that literature needs to be the fundamental element of the liberal arts education because of the benefits books offer their readers. Mr. Edmundson also claims that current educational trends have either misused or neglected to recognize the vital role reading plays in a well-rounded liberal arts education. He talked about the value of fiction and non-fiction literature.

This was the last program in the fifteen-year [Booknotes] series, and Mr. Edmundson commented on several authors' ideas and writing styles as clips of their remarks on previous programs were shown.

Professor Ogletree talked about his book, [All Deliberate Speed: Reflections on the First Half-Century of Brown v. Board of Education], published by W.W. Norton. On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the doctrine of "separate but equal" was unconstitutional. Mr. Ogletree examined the personal ramifications of the decision for him and his family: his childhood in the wake of the Brown decision, his student days at Stanford and Harvard Law, his immersion in the Boston busing crisis and its meaning for all Americans. Describing historical personages such as Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King Jr., Earl Warren, Anita Hill, and Clarence Thomas, he discussed the ambivalence of the judicial system, the increasing legal challenges to affirmative action, and the issue of reparations. The book traced the history of race and integration in American society.

Book Discussion on [Franklin and Winston]

Mr. Meacham talked about his book, [Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait of an Epic Friendship], published by Random House. President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill were the great leaders of World War II who set the stage for the modern world. The book explores the relationship between the two men. It was a crucial friendship, and a unique one-a president and a prime minister spending enormous amounts of time together (113 days during the war) in a variety of places, and exchanging nearly two thousand messages. They talked to each other of war, politics, the burden of command, their health, their wives, and their children. Mr. Meacham described how their relationships with their parents shaped their interactions. The book utilizes new sources including unpublished letters of President Roosevelt's secret love, Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd, the papers of Pamela Churchill Harriman, and interviews with the few surviving people who were in Roosevelt's and Churchill's joint company to look at the characters of both men.

Book Discussion on [The Pursuit of Happiness in Times of War]

Mr. Cannon talked about his book, [The Pursuit of Happiness in Times of War], published by Rowman and Littlefield. The Founders wrote in the Declaration of Independence that "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" are unalienable American rights. From the Revolutionary War through the war on terrorism, Americans have aspired to this ideal. Thus, President George W. Bush and New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani urged Americans to go to baseball games, to shop, and to do things they enjoyed, even in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

In the book, Mr. Cannon explores "the pursuit of happiness" and the role of presidents and other leaders in promoting and defending this principle. He traces the roots of Jefferson's powerful phrase and the ways in which it has been embraced by wartime presidents throughout our nation's history. Mr. Cannon draws on original research at presidential libraries and interviews with Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, among others. Mr. Cannon charts how Americans' understanding of the pursuit of happiness has changed over time.
