Book Discussion on [A Court Divided: The Rehnquist Court]

Mr. Tushnet talked about his book [A Court Divided: The Rehnquist Court and the Future of Constitutional Law], published by W. W. Norton and Company. Justice Rehnquist has served on the Supreme Court since 1972 and has been Chief Justice since 1986. Professor Tushnet served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in 1972 and 1973. Mr. Tushnet contends that the primary division on today's court is not between liberals and conservatives; rather, it is between economic conservatives and social issues conservatives. The book explores the important issues before the Supreme Court in recent years, including abortion, affirmative action, big business, advertising, gay rights, and hate speech. Following his remarks he answered questions from members of the audience.
