      <title>Book Discussion on [Slavery By Another Name]</title>
      <description>Douglas Blackmon talked about his book [Slavery By Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II], published by Doubleday. He talked about the laws enacted between the Civil War and World War II that limited the rights of blacks. During this time, blacks who committed minor crimes were forced to do hard labor for commercial interests. That day was the 100th anniversary of the arrest of Green Cottenham, who was the central character of his book. Mr. Cottenham was sentenced to hard labor in conditions that would eventually kill him. Mr. Blackmon talked about the history of racism in America and read several passages of his book. He responded to questions from members of the audience.</description>

      <title>Freedom Riders 50th Anniversary Reunion</title>
      <description>A 50th anniversary reunion was held of Freedom Riders. In the Spring and Summer of 1961, black and white Freedom Riders rode buses throughout the South in an effort to eradicate racial segregation in interstate travel and faced assaults and arrests that helped to ignite the Civil Rights movement nationwide. Speakers included honorary co-chairs Congressmen Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Bob Filner (D-CA) as well as the reflections of some of the Freedom Riders being honored. Hollis Watkins, Rutha Harris, and Emory Harris, members of the "Freedom Singers" sang.
This welcoming ceremony of the reunion was held at the Marriott in Jackson, Mississippi.</description>

"W.E.B. DuBois, A Living History Presentation" was a program of the Maryland Humanities Council. It was held May 22, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore.</description>

She discusses the cases of radio host Dr. Laura Schlesinger, [Politically Incorrect] host Bill Mahr, and murder victims Matthew Shepard and Daphne Sulk. Ms. Bruce also talks about her own experience working within the liberal organizations that she now criticizes. Ms. Bruce answered questions following her remarks.</description>

      <title>Rosa Parks Lying in Honor</title>
      <description>For a second day, Ms. Parks was honored as mourners passed by her remains lying in repose in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Among those in attendance were government officials, dignitaries, civil rights leaders, and members of the general public. She was the 29th person, and first woman, to be given such an honor.
 
 Footage shows various activities in the Rotunda from approximately 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. Following the public viewing the casket was carried to a hearse by a military honor guard, where the cortege then left for the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church for a memorial service.</description>

She also talked about Texan history and the role of women in it. This event took place at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda, California.
 
 
 Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison was elected Texas state treasurer in 1990 and became the first woman elected to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate in 1993. In 2006, she was elected chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, becoming one of the top four leaders of Senate Republicans.</description>

The suspect in the shooting, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, was charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder. He was an American-born Muslim of Palestinian descent, who had on a number of occasions expressed radical beliefs. Senator Sam Brownback spoke about the important role that faith-based communities have in getting aid to Darfur, fighting against abortion, and stopping human trafficking. Following their prepared remarks they answered questions from members of the audience.

      <title>Women in Military Service Memorial Ceremony</title>
      <description>After the Presentation of Colors, the singing of the National Anthem, and the invocation, officials from all branches of military service paid tribute to women veterans as well as women now serving. Certificates of appreciation were presented to Colonel Lois Beck and to Matius Wandler, husband of Major Dina Wandler. A wreath from the Vietnam Veterans of America was placed by two U.S. Army Nurse Corps veterans.
 
 Wilma Vaught is a retired Brigadier General. Chaplain Manning is a Colonel in the U.S. Army. General Dunwoody is the U.S. Army Deputy Chief of Staff.</description>

      <title>Space Shuttle Discovery Hatch Opening</title>
      <description>For the first time in the 50-year history of NASA, women commanded two spacecraft at the same time. They met in space when the Space Shuttle Discovery docked at the International Space Station. The Discovery crew was shown enterinig the space station after the hatch was opened at 9:39 a.m. CT on October 25, 2007.
 
 
 NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson arrived at the International Space Station earlier in  the month to begin her tenure as the first woman to command a station mission. Retired Air Force Col. Pam Melroy was the second woman to command a shuttle, Space Shuttle Discovery STS-120.</description>

The "Freedom Sunday" rally on the National Mall preceded a summit between Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev and President Ronald Reagan. Speakers called for religious liberty, an end to forced assimilation, and policies allowing emigration from the Soviet Union.

 Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian hosted an event called "Mother Earth" with musical performances and speakers from the scientific and American Indian cultural communities in the spirit of the Live Earth message. Live Earth was a 24-hour, seven-continent, multi-concert event to raise awareness of the solutions for global climate change.</description>
