      <title>Public Meeting on U.S.-Canada Pipeline</title>
      <description>Citizens spoke at the final State Department public hearing concerning the TransCanada Keystone Pipeline Proposal, which, if approved, would transport oil from Alberta, Canada, through six states with final transfer points in Houston and Port Arthur, Texas. Those who spoke against the plan said there were too many health and environmental risks for the State Department to issue a permit for the company. Proponents said the pipeline could be built safely with strict environmental guidelines all while creating thousands of jobs for the economy. There were boos and chants sporadically throughout the hearing.</description>

      <title>Safety of U.S. Nuclear Facilities</title>
      <description>Members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held a meeting on Japan's nuclear power plant crisis, the potential threat of radiation exposure to U.S. territories, and the safety of  U.S. reactors. NRC Executive Director Bill Borchardt said the Fukushima nuclear plant was on the verge of being stabilized. Other topics included the infrastructure needed to respond property to earthquakes or other disasters, possible causes of the explosions at Japan's plants, and the differences in safety precautions between U.S. and Japanese plants.
At the conclusion of the meeting, NRC Director of Public Affairs Eliot Brenner responded to questions from reporters.</description>

      <title>International Perspective on Redesigning High Schools</title>
      <description>"Redesigning High Schools: An International Perspective."  The opening plenary session focused on the results of the year's initiative in education, concentrating on the critical need to enact reforms that ensure the high school experience reflects the realities and expectations of higher education and today's global marketplace. Minister Yang and Mr. Thakore provided an international perspective to this crisis in the nation's schools. 
 
 "Education, Technology and Global Competition."  Thomas Friedman continued the education and international themes by talking about his book and about the changes in the international economy, globalization, and the new way of looking at the world that he suggests. After his presentation he answered a few governors' questions. Mr. Friedman's book is [The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century], published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He is a three-time Pulitzer Prize Winner, a columnist for [The New York Times], and the author of several books.

      <title>State of U.S. Natural Gas Infrastructure</title>
      <description>A public conference on the "State of the Natural Gas Infrastructure" was held inside the Commission Meeting Room of the offices of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Following opening remarks from the commissioners, officials from the Office of Market Oversight and Investigations gave a presentation on short-term price effects of recent hurricanes.
 
 The first panel was held on Hurricanes Katrina and Rita's impact on the nation's natural gas infrastructure. Panelists discussed damages that still needed repairs, prospects for the coming winter, and lessons learned from the natural disasters.
 
 A second panel was held on the state of the pipeline industry. Members of the panel discussed the impact of financial conditions and current contracting practices on the industry ability to construct sufficient infrastructure to meet projected demands and changing sources of supply. Panelists talked about the replacement of long-term contracts at cost-based rates with short-term contracts at negotiated rates.
 
 The third and final panel was held on the future of the pipeline industry. Members of the panel discussed which changes in current regulatory policies might increase interstate pipeline development. Panelists discussed how an adequate transmission system was necessary to meet expected increases in natural gas demand.</description>

      <description>The Democratic Policy Committee held a hearing on the state of fuel production and gasoline pricing in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Senators discussed disruptions in refining and supply capacity as a result of the disaster. They also focused on pricing practices, the levels of corporate profits, and the oil industry's reluctance in past years to take measures to increase production capacity. Witnesses testified to the hardships that both consumers and gasoline station owners face in light of increased gasoline prices.
 
 During the hearing a meter indicating profits per second and the total amount of corporate profits earned during the hearing period was mounted on a wall.</description>
