Life and Career of Robert Strauss

Mr. Strauss was recently appointed U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union. He was selected despite his allegiance to the Democratic Party, for which he served as national party chairman during the 1970s. Mr. Strauss also served as a special trade representative of the United States for two years under President Jimmy Carter. He explained his connections with national and world leaders and his belief in the importance of communications and negotiations with people. He defined what it meant to have power in modern politics and how power had changed over the decades. According to Mr. Strauss, to become a "bad guy" in politics, ethics are compromised and allegiances are broken. A Texas politician, Mr. Strauss described the aura of John Connally and Lyndon B. Johnson and the importance of Texas politics. As a young adult he became involved with Connally's gubernatorial campaign and stated that this experience became his link to the Democratic National Committee. He described himself as a "Yellow dog" Democrat implying that he always voted Democratic based on his belief in the two-party system. Many of Mr. Strauss's comments were directed at the past two presidential administrations and his honesty and straightforwardness in his handling of business with Presidents Reagan and Bush. "The trick is not to change government but to get good people in government, and then we'll have good government." he responded when asked about the nature of modern American politics. He concluded his remarks by commenting on his experiences as a trade representative and as an ambassador to the Middle East during the Carter administration.

for his positions or his friends. For example, he supported House majority
leader Jim Wright even during the ethics investigation and
reprimanded his fellow Democrats who would not support Wright.

Mr. Brooks is also well known for his strong independence and his
directness.

Life and Career of Augustus Hawkins

Retiring Representative Augustus Hawkins spoke of his 28 years in the U.S. House and nearly three decades in the California State Assembly. His political career, which spanned the New Deal and the civil rights era, has focused on better jobs, education and equal opportunity. Representative Hawkins became the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee in 1984. In seeking solutions for his concerns, he co-authored the 1978 Humphrey-Hawkins full employment bill, which sought to combine a plan for the government's full employment goals with the rival objectives of a balanced budget and reduced inflation. During the discussion, he spoke of his experiences with racial prejudice, and his position as senior member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Representing South-Central Los Angeles, including Watts, his district was more than four-fifths black or Hispanic. Representative Hawkins voiced his concern for future political leadership, "There's been a feeling that the public has become alienated from their leadership. We have such fine people but they're not seeking public office."
