The Medal of Freedom is America's highest civilian award and was created by executive order in 1963 by President John. F. Kennedy.</description>

      <title>Ronald Reagan Funeral Service</title>
      <description>In a religious funeral service for President Reagan current and former world leaders and U.S. presidents gathered to pay their respects. Eulogies were given by former President George H.W. Bush, former Canadian Prime Minister Mulrooney former British Prime Minister Thatcher, and President George W. Bush.
 
 The program began with the entry of the casket and the family into the vestibule of the cathedral. The program includes scenes of guests leaving the cathedral after the casket and the family departed. The program concludes with a split screen of the interior of the cathedral where the final music is being played and scenes of the honor guard assembling at Andrews Air Force Base.
 
 Lady Thatcher's remarks were pre-recorded on video due to health concerns. The service was one of several official ceremonies that paid tribute to the former president with full military honors, musical selections and traditional hymns.</description>

      <title>Rosa Parks Funeral Service</title>
      <description>Past and present elected officials, Congressional Black Caucus members, civil rights leaders, noted clergy, and other dignitaries attended the funeral of Rosa Parks, who died October 24, 2005 at age 92. Reverend Jesse Jackson delivered the eulogy, while other participants, including former President Bill Clinton, paid tribute to Ms. Parks' legacy as a civil rights leader and her life as an example of perseverance. In often rousing remarks, participants also talked about the current state of race relations, the plight of minority groups in America, and the aspirations of the black community. 
 
 The church had a capacity of 4,000 people, and was one of Detroit's largest. Several soloists and choral groups of local and national renown performed at the ceremony.
 
 Rosa Parks was later entombed in a mausoleum in Detroit's Woodlawn Cemetery.</description>

      <title>United Flight 93 National Memorial Dedication Ceremony</title>
      <description>Vice President Joe Biden, former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and other government officials praised the passengers and crew of Flight 93, which was one of four planes highjacked by members of the al-Qaida terrorist network. Several passengers aboard the aircraft fought with the highjackers, who intended to crash the plane into a Washington, D.C., building. The plane instead crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, due to the actions of the passengers on board the flight. After the event dignitaries spoke informally with the relatives of the victims and other members of the audience.</description>

      <title>Coretta Scott King Funeral</title>
      <description>President Bush and three former presidents, national politicians, as well as civil rights and religious leaders paid tribute to the life and memory of Coretta Scott King at a funeral service held at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Georgia. They talked about her contributions to the civil rights movement, efforts on behalf of minorities, and marriage to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 
Mrs. King's daughter Bernice, a minister, gave the eulogy, saying her mother "was not just a national figure, she was a global leader." Poet Maya Angelou and the Kings' three other children also attended the service. Some speeches were later highlighted in news media reports for their political overtones and criticisms of President Bush.
The service featured musical performances by Stevie Wonder, Michael Bolton, and Bebe and Cece Winans. The New Birth Total Praise Choir sang some of Mrs. King's favorite gospel songs, including "Amazing Grace."</description>

      <title>Tribute to Sojourner Truth</title>
      <description>The Sojourner Truth bust was unveiled in the Capitol Visitor Center Emancipation Hall. She is the first black woman to be honored with a bust at the U.S. Capitol. Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in 1797. She escaped in 1827 and became a leader in promoting the abolition of slavery and women's voting rights. Cicely Tyson re-enacted Sojourner Truth's most famous speech, delivered to a women's convention in 1851.
 
 
 The prelude was sung by Lomax Spaulding, Dorinda Clarke Cole and Yolanda Adams. After the presenation of the colors, Yolanda Pelzer sang the national anthem. Students from the Ron Clark Academy also performed.
 
 The program opened with a video clip of Nell Irvin Painter being interviewed on the "Writings of Sojourner Truth" program on April 30, 2001.</description>

      <description>Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in honor of her leadership and steadfast commitment to human rights and for promoting freedom, peace and democracy in her home country of Myanmar (Burma). Speakers included House and Senate leaders, Secretary of State Clinton, and former First Lady Laura Bush.
Aung San Suu Kyi was a leader in her country's 1988 uprising, and elected prime minister in 1990. The military junta, however, would not cede power, and she was placed under house arrest for a total of 15 years; the final release happened in 2010. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.</description>

      <title>Funeral Mass for Pope John Paul II</title>
      <description>Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany led a traditional liturgical funeral mass for Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. Following the arrival of dignitaries and celebrants, the Pope's simple cypress coffin was placed on the steps outside Saint Peter's Basilica where mass was delivered in several languages including Italian, Polish, German, and Latin. Portions of the mass, including Cardinal Ratzinger's homily on the late Pope's life and influence, were translated into English with a voiceover. The Sistine Choir sang throughout the service, which ended with pall bearers turning the coffin toward the crowd and the crowd shouting cheers of respect and "Saint John Paul" in Italian.
 
 The official U.S. delegation included President and Mrs. George W. Bush, former President Bill Clinton, former President George H. W. Bush, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Other dignitaries included heads of state, diplomats, and leaders of several faiths. The crowd of faithful gathered in the square and around Rome for both the mass and the public viewing in the days before the ceremony was estimated at several million people.
 
 The television coverage was provided by Vatican TV, including commentary in English by Archbishop John Foley (originally from Philadelphia), president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.</description>

      <title>Memorial Service for West Virginia Coal Miners</title>
      <description>President Obama and Vice President Biden delivered eulogies at a memorial service for the 29 coal miners killed in an explosion that occurred on April 5, 2010, in the Upper Big Branch Mine in Montcoal, West Virginia. Senator Rockefeller also spoke, and Representative Rahall spoke on behalf of his colleagues, Representatives Mollohan and Capito, who were also present. Governor Manchin presided.
West Virginia first lady Gayle Manchin read the name of each miner as his family entered the room. The service included posting of the colors by the West Virginia National Guard, The National Anthem performed by Randall Reid-Smith, "Angels Watching Over Me" performed by the Trap Hill Middle School Choir, "Amazing Grace" performed by Appalachian Bible College's pianist Michelle Hontz, "Go Rest High on That Mountain" performed by Matthew Jones, and "This Light of Mine" performed by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Male Chorus.</description>

      <title>Eunice Kennedy Shriver Funeral</title>
      <description>A funeral was held for Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of John F. Kennedy. Speakers included her daughter Maria Shriver, her grandchildren, and  Special Olympics Athlete and longtime friend Loretta Claiborne. Eunice Shriver founded the Special Olympics in 1968. 
 
 Also in attendance were Vice President Joe Biden, Oprah Winfrey, and singer Stevie Wonder. Mrs. Shriver's brother Senator Edward Kennedy did not attend the service held at the Saint Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Hyannis, Massachusetts. 
 
 The on-line presentation begins just as the service was underway and does not include the procession with the Special Olympics Torch being carried into the church by Special Olympians and law enforcement officers, followed by the hearse with Mrs. Shriver's casket, and the family walking behind it.</description>

      <title>Fort Hood Memorial Service</title>
      <description>President Obama military leaders, and clergy delivered remarks at a memorial service for the 13 people killed in a shooting at Fort Hood, Texas on November 4. President Obama praised the victims for their service and said that the legacy of the dead will live beyond their "incomprehensible" slayings. 
The boots, helmets and rifles and service photographs of the slain soldiers were lined up before the podium where President Obama spoke, and family members of the dead wore white ribbons as they were escorted to seats at the ceremony.</description>

      <title>Memorial Service for Sargent Shriver</title>
      <description>A wake was held for R. Sargent Shriver Jr. who died on January 18, 2011. Mr. Shriver, who was married to President John F. Kennedy's sister Eunice, was the first director of the Peace Corps and the U.S. ambassador to France from 1968 to 1970. He served as the first director of the Office of Economic Opportunity in the Lyndon Johnson administration, developing the Job Corps and Head Start. He was George McGovern's running mate in the 1972 presidential election.
Speakers included his children, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, 1972 Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern, and Bill Moyers.</description>

      <description>Events surrounding the funeral of Coretta Scott King were shown. Ms. King's casket arrived at the Georgia State Capitol Rotunda in Atlanta. Members of the public paid respect to the civil rights leader and wife of Martin Luther King, Jr. Coretta Scott King died on January 30, 2006 after suffering a stroke and a mild heart attack. 
 
 The public viewing was held in the rotunda until 8 pm EST. The funeral was to be held at noon EST at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia.</description>

      <title>Vietnam Veterans Memorial Ceremony</title>
      <description>The annual Memorial Day observance held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. included a proclamation to begin the national commemoration of the Vietnam War's 50th anniversary. President Obama and other dignitaries made remarks. The ceremony, co-hosted by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and the National Park Service, included wreath-layings by patriotic organizations, presentation and retirement of the colors, and music by the U.S. Marine Band and Army Chorus. The invocation included a message from the Reverend Billy Graham. The presidential proclamation was read by Medal of Honor recipient Brian Thacker. Tom Selleck was the master of ceremony.
This ceremony marked the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Vietnam War and the start of 13 years of commemoration of those who served in that war.</description>

      <description>President Obama and other dignitaries gathered at Arlington National Cemetery for the annual ceremony honoring the nation's veterans. The president laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns before proceeding to the nearby amphitheater where he, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, and others addressed military personnel, dignitaries, and veterans at a ceremony which included music and the parade of colors. In his remarks. the president talked about the nation's obligation to help returning veterans transition back into civilian life. He also noted that this Veterans Day was the first in a decade in which no American troops were "fighting and dying in Iraq."</description>
