Black male teenagers are eleven times as likely to be killed by a gun than white male teenagers, and the leading cause of death among young black males is other black males. The commission sought solutions to reverse these statistics and promote positive values for black males. Dr. Sullivan cited lack of access to health care, a violent culture, and self-destructive behavior as being symptoms of a deeper despair among black males caused by job discrimination and low self-esteem. He advocated the resurgence of traditional sources of strength for black males: the traditional family and a strong sense of community.
